His fellow prisoner explains that they are in a vertical prison, where there is nothing to do but wait for food, which comes through a platform that descends the floors. Thus, those in the first cells eat more, leaving only scraps for those at the lowest levels. Plagued by hunger, prisoners do whatever it takes to survive.

In the city of Vitória, in the Basque Country, a series of macabre murders frightens the population. The criminal, a local celebrity, ends up being discovered by young inspector Unai López de Ayala. 20 years later, homicides happen again, with the same characteristics as before, and the arrested man is about to get out of jail.
